Almost There: How Acupuncture Supports Your Third Trimester

There is something special about the third trimester. The finish line is in sight, the to do list is coming together and baby is making their presence known in the most tangible way. It is a busy, exciting and wonderful time. Your body is doing incredible things and it deserves just as much care and attention in these final weeks as it did in the very beginning.

Acupuncture is a well suited companion through the third trimester. Whether you are managing the physical demands of a growing baby, preparing for labour or simply looking for a calm and nurturing space to rest and be cared for, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has something genuinely meaningful to offer right up until you give birth (and beyond).

What TCM Understands about the Third Trimester

In TCM, the third trimester is seen as a time when the body’s resources are working at full capacity. The baby is growing rapidly, drawing on Qi, Blood and Kidney essence to support its final weeks of development. Your body is simultaneously preparing for the physical event of birth, which requires its own kind of readiness and strength.

The Kidneys, which in TCM are understood as the root of vitality and the foundation of reproductive health, play a central role in this trimester. Strong Kidney Qi supports the spine, pelvis and the deep reserves of energy that labour will call upon. The Blood continues to nourish both you and baby, which is priority to focus on during your acupuncture treatment.

The Liver’s relevancy during this trimester, supports the body as the physical demands on joints, muscles and pelvis increase. In TCM, the Liver supports the body by pursuing the smooth flow of Qi. If tension and physical stress are lessened, the possibility of staying adaptable during birth is more likely.

Acupuncture in the third trimester focusing on maintaining this balance, keeping Qi and Blood flowing freely, supporting the Kidneys and help the body feel ready for the next step.

Common Third Trimester Discomforts Acupuncture Can Help With

As the baby grown and your body makes final preparations, a new onset of physical experiences may arrive. Pelvic pain, lower back discomfort, swelling of the feet and ankles, heartburn and insomnia are common in these final moments during this chapter. Acupuncture offers relief for many of these, working with your body (not against it).

Treatment is effective at providing relief for tension so you feel more comfortable day to day. Swelling for how it is understood in TCM is the gathering of dampness and fluid, which may respond well to acupuncture treatments, helping to provide some ease.

Sleep becomes more elusive in the third trimester for obvious reasons and acupuncture treatments are known for the calm effect on your nervous system for a more restful night. Many find the deep relaxation a side effect of treatment that carries through the days following treatment, allowing rest to be found in the final stretch.

Moxibustion for Breech Presentation

If your baby is breech as you move into the third trimester, you may have heard of moxibustion as an option to explore. Moxibustion involves the burning of a herb called mugwort near a specific acupuncture point known as UB 67 which is located on the baby toe. This treatment is used to encourage baby to turn downward to be in an optimal head-down position.

It is a gentle and non-invasive approach, that can begin as early as 30 weeks for best results. While results vary and moxibustion cannot guarantee a turn, many find it reassuring and an empowering option to explore before turning to more clinical interventions. It is always worth discussing with your midwife or OB alongside your acupuncture care.

Birth Preparation and the Labour Process

One of the most common reasons someone books an acupuncture treatment in the final weeks of pregnancy is for birth prep and its easy to understand why. The concept of supporting the body to be ready and adaptable for labour is proactive and empowering to you in the final stretch. It is often a treatment recommended by midwives and doulas.

In TCM, birth preparation focuses on encouraging smooth flow of Qi downward, softening and ripening the cervix and allowing your body to release any tension that make create resistance. It is not about forcing labour to begin before your body is ready but creating the most favourable conditions for labour to unfold naturally when the time comes.

These acupuncture treatments usually begin around weeks 36 to 37. Many report that their labours felt more progressive and manageable with consistent acupuncture treatments. It is a gentle, supportive and meaningful way to approach the final chapter of pregnancy.

How Often to Come in during the Third Trimester

For general comfort and wellbeing, sessions every two weeks invite consistency for most. As you move into the final four weeks and begin birth preparation treatments, weekly sessions help to accumulate support leading up to birthing.

As always, everything is tailored to you and where you are in your pregnancy. Your acupuncturist will always check in each visit and adjust accordingly to that you feel supported each and every treatment in your journey.
